Can You Die from Anxiety?

Can you die from anxiety?

The short answer is NO. Whew. However, it can wreak havoc on our health, which could become severe.

So How Does Anxiety Affect Our Health?

Heart Health:

When we’re anxious or stressed, our body goes into a “fight or flight,” which can raise our heart rate and blood pressure. Over time, this extra strain on our heart can increase our risk of developing heart problems like heart disease or having a stroke. Managing Anxiety through relaxation techniques, exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices can help protect our heart health.

Immune System:

Stress and Anxiety can make fighting infections and illnesses difficult for our body.

I have an autoimmune condition, which I believe was caused because of the effects of stress over many years. But again, it goes back to how we can reduce stress and manage Anxiety better so that it doesn’t weaken our immune system. I used to have a lot of aches and pains and headaches and never realized that this was all stress-related. I minimized the stress, which also minimized the aches and pains.

So, taking steps to reduce stress, such as practicing relaxation techniques, regular exercise, and getting enough sleep, can help support your immune system and keep you healthier. I know these relaxation techniques, exercises, and so forth might seem repetitive throughout the articles I have written here; however, please don’t underestimate how these can help you manage Anxiety.

Stomach Problems:

Anxiety can affect our digestive system, leading to symptoms like stomachaches, diarrhea, constipation, or nausea. In some cases, chronic stress and Anxiety can sometimes lead to gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). So, being conscious of managing Anxiety through stress-reduction techniques, maintaining a pretty balanced and healthy diet, and avoiding triggers like caffeine or spicy foods can help alleviate stomach issues.

Sleep Troubles:

Anxiety can upset our ability to fall or stay asleep, which can lead to insomnia or poor sleep quality. Not getting enough sleep besides feeling crabby can worsen Anxiety and contribute to other health problems like depression, weight gain, and impaired cognitive function. So, having a bedtime routine, creating a conducive sleep environment, and practicing breathing or relaxation techniques can improve sleep quality and help manage anxiety-related sleep disturbances.

Mental Health:

Anxiety can affect our mental well-being, leading to feelings of worry, fear, or nervousness that can be hard to shake. Over time, we might turn to alcohol, drugs, or even suicidal thoughts. Please nip this in the bud before you contemplate substance abuse in its various forms because it doesn’t help. Sorry if I am coming across as bossy. But substance abuse is an ugly trail to go on, and we will make decisions that we will later regret or find challenging to get back on track with our Mental Health. So again, find professional support or a support group or that special someone who can be there for us during this mentally challenging time.

So again, we can’t die from Anxiety, but the effects that this can have on our lives long term if we don’t treat it will be detrimental. So, take proactive steps to manage your symptoms and prioritize your well-being. You can’t be there for others, family, and friends, nor can you lead a fulfilling life if you can’t manage your Anxiety.
